Chapter 13: jack
Waking up this morning, a realization smacked me right in the face at the same time the sun peeking through the blinds did; the same exciting, and nerve-wracking realization that I had before falling asleep last night: I almost kissed Kaia.
The same Kaia that my best friend is obviously pursuing. The girl Iâve known for less than a month. I got caught up in the moment, and I almost kissed her. I really wanted to kiss her, too. I probably wouldâve gone through with it, had I not been jolted out of whatever state of hypnosis the rain and Kaiaâs beautiful smile put me under. I blame Paris for being so damn romantic.
I rub my eyes, not wanting to get out of bed yet, but rolling away from the sun as I try to focus on thoughts about my day ahead, and not on the way my hands felt on Kaiaâs back, or the way she smelled like brown sugar, or how even soaking wet she was the most beautiful girl Iâve ever seen. Try and fail.
I shouldâve known when I ran into her at the cafe yesterday that I was in trouble. She looked so beautiful, taking up two chairs at the table and focusing on her book. She looked stunning even after running through the torrential downpour. Her copper hair was soaked, and her makeup had run underneath her eyes from the rain, but I was a goner. Undone and utterly at her mercy.
When I noticed she was cold, I didnât even think twice about reaching for her. I acted purely on instinct, like it was a reflex to pull her into my arms. To take away her discomfort. But the proximity and her soft skin under my touch did me in. Itâs been hard enough to stay away from her in a group, so getting to spend time with her one-on-one felt like a dream come true, as well as a living nightmare, knowing that may have been our only alone time together.
I groan, mentally kicking myself for not kissing her, consequences be damned.
I roll over to check the time right as my phone lights up with a new text message, and a smile spreads across my face when I read the name.
Kaia: Hey, itâs Kaia! Just wanted to say thank you again for your company at the cafe yesterday. We hope you guys have a blast at the game today!
A very friendly text. Neutral, safe.
So what if I almost kissed her, and then proceeded to give her my phone number? So what if I find myself wanting to talk to her all the time and somehow gravitate toward her in every group setting? Weâre friends. Friends give each other their phone numbers. I rub a hand over my face and type a quick response, sending it before I have a chance to overthink it.
Me: No problem, Kaia! It was fun hanging for a bit, and I didnât even have to shower when I got home.
